Currently a great deal of interest in Oil Sands Process-Affected Water (OSPW)
OSPW contains ill defined organic pollutants known as 'Naphthenic Acids' (NA)
Naphthenic acids exist in poorly characterised 'Super-Complex' mixtures
Advances in analytical methods (i.e. two dimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry; 2D GC-MS) allows identification of individual compounds within these mixtures as methyl esters (i.e. adamantane-1-carboxylic acid)
Fractionating the methylated ‘super-complex’ mixture (Syncrude OSPW Acid Extracts) by silver ion thin layer chromatography (Ag⁺TLC) and now silver ion solid phase extraction (Ag⁺SPE) will aid in the identification of individual compounds
These can then be assayed toxicologically
